How Long a Compressed Mattress Takes to Expand (and When to Judge the Feel)

Compression is how the mattress ships. It is not the finished bed. Give it time to expand before you decide whether 8", 10", 12", or 14" was the right call.

Updated September 29, 2026 8–10 minute read Pairs with the firmness-by-thickness guide
Start here if you only have one minute
  1. It arrives in a carton, vacuum-packed. That is doorstep delivery, not the mattress in the product photos.
  2. Open the bag carefully, lay the mattress flat, and give it room. Do not judge thickness while it is still folded in plastic.
  3. Most beds rebound in the first 24 hours. Use 48–72 hours before you compare the feel to 8", 10", 12", or 14".
  4. You can sleep on it the first night. The 100-night mattress window starts on the signed delivery date, not the night it finishes expanding.
  5. Day-one flat is packing, not a defect. Pick height with the firmness-by-thickness guide; use this page only to check the delivery.

The question people actually have

This article is for the hours after FedEx leaves a carton at the door. The height decision is already done. What shows up instead are simpler, more urgent questions:

  • Why does it look half as thick as the photo?
  • Can I sleep on it tonight?
  • It feels firmer than the 12" I ordered.
  • Is the smell normal?

Those are expansion questions, not collection questions. A still-expanding mattress on day one can look smaller or less tall than the product photos. That is packing, not a defect.

What this article will deliver A timeline from open-bag to 72 hours; when you may sleep on it; how this relates to 8" / 10" / 12" / 14"; what odor and sheets mean for the trial; and when to email support instead of waiting.

How the mattress actually arrives

Furnitoply mattresses ship compressed and vacuum-packed in a carton. After payment confirms, the order is handed to FedEx within one business day (Monday–Friday, excluding U.S. federal holidays). Transit in the contiguous United States is typically 3–6 days after the carrier scans the carton. Tracking is the live window.

FedEx leaves that carton at your door or building threshold. That is the full service. There is no white-glove placement, stairs service, assembly, unpacking, or old-mattress haul-away. You bring the carton inside, open it, and open the vacuum bag carefully. There are no tools and no installation appointment.

Free outbound shipping applies to a physical street address in the 48 contiguous states or Washington, D.C. Not to P.O. Boxes, APO/FPO addresses, lockers, Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories. A mattress and a sofa on the same checkout may leave as two cartons with two tracking numbers.

The expansion timeline

Use this table as the inspection checklist. The hours are typical, not a guarantee that every corner finishes at the same minute.

When What you will see Do this Do not do this
Open bag, 0–2 hours Flat, possible crease lines at the folds Lay it flat on the frame or a clean floor. Remove the plastic. Let the sides breathe. Do not judge height in the bag. Do not bounce on it to “test firmness.”
2–24 hours Noticeable rebound; the surface may still look uneven You may put on a sheet and sleep. Open a window if you notice a new-material smell. Do not treat “two inches shorter than the photo” as a defect on night one.
24–48 hours Most mattresses are close to the named height Check shoulders and hips again. Still too early to decide you bought the wrong comfort level.
48–72 hours Feel should track firm, balanced, cushioned, or plush Now compare it to the thickness guide. If it is still nearly packed after 72 hours, skip ahead to “when it is not normal.”
The next few nights Normal sleep impressions start to show Use the 100-night window as it was written: sleep on it. Do not keep the bed unused for weeks to “preserve” the trial.

0–2 hours Open and flatten

Cut or unroll the bag away from the fabric. Lay the mattress out fully. Corner creases from the vacuum fold are common and usually ease as the core takes air. This is the worst time to decide the bed is too thin.

First 24 hours Most of the height returns

The comfort layers start to read as a surface again. It can still sit below the look in the photos. If you need the bed tonight, sleep on it. The trial clock already started when the carton was signed for.

24–72 hours Judge the setting here

This is the window the product FAQ points to. A 12" should no longer look like an 8". If the feel is still a surprise after three days, that is a firmness question — go back to height, not back into the shipping bag.

Still deciding whether the feel is “wrong”? Wait until 48–72 hours, then read the thickness guide again. First-night firm often means the comfort layers have not finished opening, not that you must jump from 12" to 14".

How this connects to 8", 10", 12", and 14"

Height on a Furnitoply mattress is the comfort setting: 8" firm, 10" balanced, 12" cushioned, 14" plush. That map does not change because the bed shipped in a carton. Both an 8" and a 14" arrive compressed. The difference shows after expansion.

If night one feels firmer than you expected, treat packing as the first explanation. Recheck after 48–72 hours. Only then decide whether you wanted a different setting. Two people who already disagreed on firmness should still meet at 10" or 12" — expansion time will not give you two heights on one mattress.

Choose height first, size second, collection last. This article does not replace that order. It only tells you when the bed is ready to be compared with it. Full map: How to Choose Mattress Firmness by Thickness.

Smell, sheets, and the first night

Smell. A short-lived new-material smell after the bag opens is common. Ventilate the room. Do not cover it with heavy perfume. Persistent odor and heavy perfume are listed in the return policy as reasons a change-of-mind return can be refused.

Sheets. A fitted sheet is fine the first night. It keeps the surface cleaner. Stains, pet damage, smoke, and a missing law label can take the mattress out of the change-of-mind path. Sleeping with a sheet and light impressions from normal use are expected.

First night. You may sleep on it immediately. The mattress trial is 100 nights from signed delivery. Sleeping on it is expected. Leaving it unused does not improve the claim; it only delays the only test that matters — whether the expanded feel is one you can live with.

When it is not normal

Still in range: flat at open-bag, shorter than the photo on day one, fold creases, a light new-product smell, a firmer first night.

Email support@furnitoply.com with photos and the order number when:

  • The carton is crushed, wet, or the inner bag is torn on arrival.
  • After 72 hours the mattress is still close to its packed height.
  • There are holes, rips, missing parts, or the law label is gone.
  • The size or height on the label does not match the order.

Damaged, defective, or wrong items: Furnitoply arranges pickup at no charge. Change of mind inside the 100-night window, contiguous U.S.: mattress pickup is $129. That fee is not “free returns.” Do not open a change-of-mind claim on hour two because the bed still looks packed.

Why the carton is small on purpose

A compressed Queen is easier to take through a door, a hallway, or an elevator than an expanded one. That is the tradeoff for doorstep parcel delivery. The carrier stops at the threshold. Stairs and the last lift onto the frame are yours. If you also ordered a sofa, expect a second carton.

If you say this Do this
“It looks half as thick as the photo.” Wait 24–72 hours. Compare to photos only after that.
“It feels too firm tonight.” Sleep two or three nights before you change the height choice.
“I smell something.” Ventilate. Do not perfume the cover.
“It still looks packed after 72 hours.” Email support with photos and the order number.
“I just don’t like the feel.” 100 nights from signed delivery. Change-of-mind pickup is $129.

FAQ

Can I sleep on it the first night?

Yes. Take it out of the bag, lay it flat, and sleep if you need the bed. The 100-night window starts on the signed delivery date.

How long until it matches the product photo?

Often within 24 hours. Use 48–72 hours before you treat height or firmness as final.

Does a 14" arrive taller than an 8" on day one?

Both arrive compressed. The difference shows after expansion. Do not use the packed profile to check which setting you bought.

Does it need assembly?

No. No tools and no appointment. Open the carton, open the bag, let it expand.

When do I contact support instead of waiting?

Contact support now for damage, a torn inner bag, the wrong size, or a mattress that is still packed after 72 hours. Wait on “too firm” until it has expanded.

Does opening the bag void the trial?

No. Unboxing and sleeping are expected. Stains, pet damage, smoke, heavy perfume, and a removed law label are not.

What to do next

If you have not ordered yet, ignore the collection name for ten seconds and pick a height. Unsure means 10" or 12". Then Twin, Full, Queen, or King. Then the cover you want to look at. The shipping carton will not preview that choice.

If the carton is already in the hallway, open it, wait, and only then decide whether the feel matches the setting you bought. That is the whole job of a compressed mattress.
